Digital Rights

Digital rights are important because it protects the right of citizens who wish to be present on social media. It gives people the right to express themselves without persecution. It is freedom of speech but online. People have the right to post what and how they feel without any threats to harm people. “As we increasingly conduct our lives online – shopping, socializing and sharing information – our digital rights, particularly the rights to privacy and freedom of expression, are becoming more important” (What are your digital rights?, n.d.).  Unfortunately, in todays world, freedom of speech rather its being verbally articulated or written online is costing people their lives. Digital rights are just not freedom of speech, but government agency also use digital data to gather information on certain ethnic groups and groups of socio-economic status without permission. Its almost like they are being targeted based solely on their status.

I do not believe in speaking ill of any race, religion, gender, or lifestyle choice. I believe digital rights should be respected by all, but there is a limit to what you say and post. Digital data justice make’s sure that ethics are being upheld while allowing people to express themselves. It has also been found that certain socio-economic families are more targeted by agency’s when it comes to digital rights. “For example, a teenager from an immigrant family, living in a low-income area, whose parents are poor and who belongs to a minority ethnic group and religion is exponentially more likely to be targeted for surveillance by both protective (social services) and preventive at (law enforcement) authorities, and is also likely to have less opportunity to resist that surveillance or intervention than her friend who lives in a high-income area and belongs to the majority ethnic group” (Taylor, 2017).
